Over $100 million has been spent on the opening and closing ceremonies, which will feature 15,000 performers and 29,000 fireworks. The amount is twice that spent by Athens in 2004. China has invested $43 billion on the Games, which have been widely dubbed as 'the greatest show on earth'. The ceremony is expected to be broadcast to an estimated audience of one billion - the largest television audience in history.
